  • 1866

    First Female Students

    In 1866, the university achieved two significant milestones: it welcomed its first female students and launched its first evening class. Over the years, Rider University has continued to evolve and expand, offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs across various disciplines.

  • 1929

    Clair F. Bee introduces intercollegiate athletics

    Clair F. Bee, the college’s first director of athletics, introduced intercollegiate athletics to Rider University. He also served as the first coach for football, basketball, and baseball.

  • 1958

    Alumni Gym completed

    Construction of the Alumni Gymnasium was completed in 1941, and the building officially opened its doors for student use. To celebrate the opening, Rider hosted Seton Hall in the new building’s first men’s basketball game.

  • 1990

    Athletics Hall of Fame established

    In 1990, Rider University established the Athletics Hall of Fame to honor student-athletes and coaching staff members who contributed to the university’s 60 years of athletic excellence.

  • 2008

    Jason Thompson ’08 selected in first round of NBA Draft

    In June 2008, the Sacramento Kings selected Jason Thompson ’08 with the 12th overall pick in the NBA Draft. Jason Thompson became the first Rider student-athlete to play in the NBA.

  • 2020

    Stella Johnson selected by Phoenix Mercury in WNBA Draft

    On Friday, April 17, 2020, the Phoenix Mercury selected Stella Johnson with the 29th overall pick in the WNBA Draft. Stella Johnson became the first-ever Rider women’s basketball player to be drafted into the WNBA.

  • 2005

    Student Recreation Center opens

    As part of the campus-wide strategic plan outlining the University’s future, the 55,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Student Recreation Center opened its doors on October 20, 2005. Additionally, the university completed construction of New Hall, a brand-new residence hall.
