Bring Your Workout Outdoors

Now that the weather is finally getting warmer and the days are getting longer, it’s time to take your workout outdoors! There are so many great opportunities around New Jersey to take in the outdoors while getting your sweat on!

hartshorne-woods-parkInstead of running on the treadmill, visit some of New Jersey’s hiking trails where you can burn more calories, getting a tougher workout, and breathe in some of that fresh air!

Visit the infamous Hartshorne Woods in Atlantic Highlands where you can use the hills as an extra jump to your cardio routine. The 794-acre site is just waiting for you to hike the challenging trail system with worthwhile scenic views of the Navesink River.

Or head over to Holmdel Park to run some of the cross country trails. Take it easy (well easier) on the K-12 cross country routes or try your hand at something a little more challenging with the college cross country map.

Running not your style?  Not a problem. Try integrating a water sport into your routine. Don’t worry, we’re not talking about going in the water (just yet), try kayaking or stand up paddle boarding. It’s a great way to challenge your muscle groups, especially ones that you tend to neglect.

Now that you’re out in the great outdoors, what’s the physical benefit to you?

  1. It’s free! You don’t need a gym membership to enjoy the outdoors. This means there’s no excuse to get out there and get going.
  2. The fresh air will help reinvigorate you so you can keep going without the caffeine! A recent study found that “exercising in natural environments was associated with greater feelings of revitalisation, increased energy and positive engagement, together with decreases in tension, confusion, anger and depression.” So when you’re mad, upset, or just frustrated, try going outside instead of the gym.
  3. You’ll soak in Vitamin D (just remember to wear sunscreen for prolonged periods of time) which will help you stay fit and happy.

Now get out there and get going! Be sure to send us your pictures of where you’re going!
